Jesse Sandman: Resident Reflections, Summer 2015
Jesse is a proud Cincinnatian. As our summer Communications Resident, Jesse managed and developed content for our social media channels...and so much more. Here's what Jesse had to say about his residency experience:
What did you accomplish during your residency that you're most proud of?
I am most proud of the systems I’ve helped develop for future residents. It was extremely gratifying for me to have a role in developing PL’s growing communication model. Some examples include the creation of a Social Media Guide for Partner Organizations and The Globe: How-to Guide. I hope that these documents create a strong foundation for future Residents to build upon and achieve success!
What skills did you sharpen?
I believe that I was able to sharpen a wide variety of skills during my time as a Communications Resident. My ability to multi-task and prioritize different projects has grown immensely. More importantly, I’ve learned the value of having input from those around me and how their ideas can help strengthen my own.
My ability to think objectively when writing has seen the most improvement with my exposure to things like blogging and drafting newsletters. I’ve inevitably absorbed strengths and techniques from the many talented people I’ve been fortunate enough to work with. While I may not have achieved mastery of those various skills, I now have a better understanding of their place in the ideation process. Long story short, my writing skills and ability to perceive projects holistically has improved.
Did you make any connections or form any relationships during your term that you plan to carry forward?
I plan on revisiting many of the innovators and creatives I’ve encountered during my Residency, particularly the ones who might contribute to Create Space and idea I’ve been developing. Having exposure to many of the great galleries and workspaces in our city has opened my eyes to the potential of my own project and the importance of physical space in community building. I plan on leveraging the connections I’ve made in order to gain experience and wisdom about the placemaking process.
What's next for you?
I plan on continuing to hone my writing/communication skills and create platforms to market my skills here in Cincinnati. I hope to make even stronger connections with Cincy’s innovators in order to gather input and support for my own project. I’d also like to build/identify the community of performers and musicians that would be interested in my project. When the timing is right, I plan to participate in the ArtWorks Co-starters Program, which I learned about during my residency.
Basically, I want to spend my time selectively absorbing inspirational models and stories from my own backyard.
